What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is a 5000-year old medicinal system that couldn’t be more applicable as a tool for optimizing modern, active lifestyles.

We check the weather outside before leaving the house.

But what about the weather INSIDE?

We know the weather impacts the way that our day unfolds; whether we’re appropriately dressed. Whether the traffic on our commute will be slow. Whether we’ll long for a hot lunch or an ice cream cone on our lunch break.

But somehow, in our push towards modernity, we’ve all but forgotten that the weather impacts our lives INSIDE the body as well as our experiences outside. Most of us have no idea if there’s a sunny day or a tornado, hurricane, wildfire deep within.

Ayurvedic medicine is a 5000-year-old philosophy that helps us clearly understand the weather outside our bodies, and the weather in our bodies and lives and allows us to harmonize our internal and external worlds, effectively preparing us for the weather – inside and out – whatever the day is throwing at us before launching in.

The literal translation of Ayurveda in Sanskrit is “science of life.” Not just the science of ALL life, but the science of how life in each and every being unfolds. Quite literally, Ayurveda is a lens through which to study our own lives, and it gives us the tools to heal, bolster + improve them — inside and out. The teachings of Ayurveda are designed to help us align with the rhythms of nature—hour by hour, day after day, and from season to season.

This ancient science links an intuitive understanding of the qualities and elements of our world to how we each are individually affected by the foods we eat, the lives we lead, the experiences we have, the environments we exist in. It teaches us that when we try to live outside the laws of our universe (ie: going against the current of nature) our vital energies are drained and dis-ease results.

Sound complicated? It’s really not.

If we need examples of how this incredible, potent system works, all we need to do is look out the window and watch the weather.
